Join the Jamaica Down's Syndrome Foundation in cleebrating World Down Syndrome Day on
21st March 2010
Down Syndrome International (DSi) has officially earmarked the 21st March each year as World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD). This date was chosen as the number 21 is synonymous with Down syndrome, signifying the uniqueness of the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome, and since we started the event in 2006, it has grown into a truly global celebration.
The aims of WDSD are to promote awareness and understanding of Down syndrome, and to mobilise support and recognition of the dignity, rights and well being of people with Down syndrome across the World.
DSi does not designate a specific theme each year but rather gives flexibility for individuals and organisations to select their own themes and organise events which are relevant to their communities. Over the last 4 years, WDSD activities have had a tremendous impact, showcasing the abilities, talents and accomplishments of people with Down syndrome, and empowering people to make a statement in civil society and achieve positive outcomes.
The internet is a powerful tool for raising awareness of Down syndrome globally and we encourage people to celebrate and advertise WDSD through their own internet sites, blogs and social networking sites. However, DSi also has the capacity to advertise your WDSD celebrations through our dedicated WDSD website:
www.worlddownsyndromeday.org
and we strongly encourage people to contact us by email at wdsd@downsyndrome-singapore.org or dsint123@googlemail.com to send us further information on your planned events.
